Abstract. We review recent theoretical developments in our understanding of the late stage process of phase separation in binary systems. In particular, we summarize the asymptotic behavior of the coarsening, which has been studied on the basis of the statistical mechanical method recently developed by us and our colleagues. We discuss the scaling behavior of precipitating droplet size distribution function and the temporal power law of the average droplet size. We also comment on important but unanswered problems.
