Abstract. Concerning the mechanism of vertebrate limb pattern formation, especially bone pattern formation, several models have been proposed. Some models are based on the assumption that there may be some difference between peripheral and interior regions, and along the proximal-distal direction in developing limb buds. Others, in addition, differences along the anterior-posterior direction, differences along the circumference were also assumed. In recent years, several studies revealed the actual existence of molecules which express themselves only in restricted positions in developing limb buds. In this review, such molecules were summarized, and discussed concerning their probable role during limb development. Based on such recently discovered molecules, the mechanism of limb pattern formation is discussed.
