Abstract. Brush calligraphy works of different styles in Japan (Kaisyo, Sousyo and Kana) and Ming-style type letters were analyzed by an image scanner and pattern processing programs stored in a host computer (HITAC 660H). The structural difference between the specimens of the cursive letters and the Ming-style type letters was studied by the computer Fourier analysis. The most complete f-1 power spectrum was observed in the work of Kana style. The beauty of Japanese calligraphy works is discussed in relation to the f-1 fluctuation.
