Abstract. A family of simple, closely related models for non-equilibrium growth and aggregation processes can be used to generate a broad variety of fractal patterns. In many cases these simple models provide a basis for understanding processes of both scientific and practical importance. Although the geometric scaling properties of the structures generated by these models are relatively insensitive to model details, the universality classes seem to be quite narrow and the short length scale structure is often surprisingly sensitive to model details.
