Foreword
Established in 1985 the Society for Science on Form has been providing a forum for discussion on mathematical descriptions, generation mechanisms, instrumentation and manifestation of forms in general (morphemes and patterns) by people in different discipline. The Society holds symposia every year and publishes regularly the Journal "FORMA" in English. As one of such activities the Symposium on Computer Graphics and its Applications was held in Wako-shi Saitama at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) on 17 and 18 January 1990. The Symposium was attended by about 70 people and consisted of 5 invited and 8 submitted papers in scientific sessions. At the same time computer graphics hardwares and softwares were exhibited by vendors. The present proceedings include 10 out of 13 presented papers, all of which are reviewed by the editors. They are roughly classified into topics on computer graphics, instrumentation and manifestation of forms, image processing and others.
Although the proceedings do not cover the whole activity of these topics in Japan, they show at least the present status of basic researches in many interesting and important problems. We, will be happy if this issue stimulates a future development of this field and affects students to choose the computer graphics as their activities.
