Abstract. A new method is proposed to estimate a parameter showing connectivity of elements in gray patterns. Given a continuous function f(x, y), integrals of quantities obtained from f are shown to give the parameter, say r, characterizing the connectivity, so that r = 1 for isolated convex dark element (or group of such elements), r = -1 for isolated concave light holes (or group of such holes) and |r| < 1 for complex patterns in between. It is shown that this method is effective for patterns with smooth distribution of gray level.
