Abstract. Hydra can regenerate complete animals from a random collection of dissociated cells, a cell aggregate. In such regeneration, a new pattern of the head and foot will arise anew because the original pattern and the polarity for regeneration have been completely destroyed. A possible mechanism of such de novo patterning in cell aggregates is discussed.
