Abstract. Spiral phyllotactic patterns of herbaceous plants are examined by using hypothetical model plants, which are constructed mathematically in computer and are specified by observational data. Through computer simulations of model plants, we find that the flux of solar radiation per leaf area per day is nearly constant for each phyllotactic pattern. From analysis of observed data, we find a linear relationship between lamina width and internodal distance on stems, for each phyllotactic pattern.
