Abstract. The grain size evolution during dynamic recrystallization is investigated by a continuous nucleation-and-growth model. It is shown that the probability density function of the volume v(t ) of a crystal of age t becomes lognormal, sinv is determined by a chain of independent stochastic events of nucleation. The crystal size distribution in a material is obtained as a sum of a series of lognormal distributions.
