Abstract. In order to determine whether a dynamical tendency was present in shapes designed intuitively, the dynamical characteristics of shapes designed by thirty students in the Design Field were investigated. As a case study, some beer mug grip shapes were designed intuitively, and the characteristics of the shapes when exposed to a dynamical condition reproducing the usual usage of the mug were examined through the finite element method. As a result, it was demonstrated that aesthetic desirable shapes are not always coincident with the uniform equivalent stress distribution shapes, and that the desirability may be affected by a stress coherence rather than the stress concentration.
