Abstract. After explaining nature of glassy systems including discussions of associated mysterious phenomena we discuss some representative theoretical ideas. We start with early ideas like the Kauzmann paradox and the Adam-Gibbs theory. More recent theories are exemplified by the mode coupling theory (MCT), the dynamical density functional theory (DDFT), and geometrical frustration.
